Rev. Dr. Iyanla Vanzant: VUU Convocation Speaker : Rev. Dr. Iyanla Vanzant is an inspirational speaker and New Thought spiritual teacher currently residing in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, United States. She is also a five time New York Times best-selling author for her work on the following books: Yesterday I Cried (Fireside, 2000), One Day My Soul Just Opened Up (Fireside, 1998) and In the Meantime (Fireside, 1999). Besides her writing, she has also been involved in television. In 2001 she hosted her own short-lived talk show Iyanla. Three years later, she joined the television series Starting Over as a life coach. She replaced former life coach Rana Walker. Iyanla was known for being more spiritual in her coaching, and was often known for her calm and comforting approach to helping women deal with their issues. She was especially known for having her clients have what she would call "Fierce conversations" with those they loved. Vanzant presently manages the Inner Visions Institute for Spititual Development she founded in Silver Spring, Maryland.

VUU Downs Lenoir Rhyne 28-13 In Season Opener : The VUU Panther Football Team opened its 2007 season with a convincing 28-13 win over Lenoir Rhyne College. It was the first time the Panthers have recorded an opening day victory during the Arrington Jones, III era.

VUU Football Squad Begins 2007 Campaign : Today the VUU Football Team begins practice for the 2007 season. We pray that each of the young men that play this sport will remain healthy thru the practice drills and remaining season. In saluting their efforts, I have dedicated this gallery to those who are doing positive and constructive things with their lives. Life is more than the X's and O's and it is my fervent prayer that these young men will play with courage conviction and commitment. I pray that they will learn more about teamwork, and fair play and that they will be better men from the experiences they will face during training camp and the coming season. It's so very very hard being a Panther. Go Panthers.

A Salute to Those Who Serve and Protect - Part 2 : Today I got a chance to see the fire fighters of Fire Station #15 in action. During my visit, there were 2 calls made to the station. Neither call led to a loss of life or property fortunately but it could have easily been otherwise. Later in the day, I got an opportunity to talk to Station Captain, Tina Watkins, a 19 year veteran of the department and the first woman to be promoted to the officer position. When speaking to Captain Watkins, one gets the sense that she is committed to the people and families she serves. She is a community advocate and seems to take a great deal of pride in serving and protecting community members. The other members of the crew are fire fighters: Anthony Johnson, E. B. Wood and S.A. Khabir. I didn't have much time to spend with Captain Watkins today but I plan to return to the station later in the week to find out more about this amazing woman. Once again, here's to the men and women who serve and protect. Thank you, thank you. Stay tuned!

A Salute to Those Who Serve and Protect : These are some of the fire personnel who man Fire Station #15 located on First Ave in Richmond's Highland Park neighborhood. The other day while serving as an election officer, I was struck with the notion to photograph some of the cadre of men and women who put their lives on the line for us daily. Too often we forget the sacrifices they make to keep us safe. So, this is my way of saying THANK YOU to those who man the fronts lines. Your contributions are appreciated and we thank you for your service to our community.

February, 2007 - HBCU of the Month - Virginia Union University : Virginia Union University is an historically black university located in Richmond, Virginia. It was founded in 1865 by the American Baptist Home Mission Society. From 1867 to 1870, Union, then known as Clover Institute, was housed in a former "slave jail" owned by Mrs. Mary Ann Lumpkin, the African-American widow of the deceased white owner. In 1899, the Richmond Theological Institute (formerly Clover Institute) joined with Wayland Seminary of Washington, D.C. to form Virginia Union University. In 1932, Hartshorn Memorial College for Women, established in Richmond, Virginia in 1883, became a part of Virginia Union University. Storer College, an historically black Baptist college in West Virginia (founded in 1867), merged its endowment with Virginia Union in 1964. It is located at 1500 North Lombardy Street in Richmond's northside.
